Classificatie van motorolie

Kijk eerst naar de indeling vanmotorolie, API betekent American Petroleum Institute. Basisolie is per API onderverdeeld in 5 categorieën.
We noemen het minerale olie in categorie 1 en 2. Het verschil tussen minerale oliën in categorie 1 en 2 is het verschil in zwavelgehalte en het aandeel verzadigde componenten. De grondstof van minerale olie is de ruwe olie die direct uit de grond wordt gewonnen. Deze ruwe oliën worden verwerkt en geraffineerd door middel van destillatie, ontwassen, ontasfalteren en andere processen om deze minerale oliën te vormen.
Categorie 3 is eigenlijk strikt minerale olie, maar over het algemeen noemen we het nog steeds semi-synthetischmotorolie, because its raw material is still crude oil, but its processing process is more complicated and costly than category 1 and 2 motorolies. Om het verschil samen te vatten: de synthetische oliecomponent in de basisolie is meer dan 90%, wat volledig synthetisch ismotorolie​het aandeel is minder dan 90% is semi-synthetischmotorolie​als er geen synthetische oliecomponent is, is het mineraalmotorolie.
Een ander ding om te zeggen is de classificatie vanmotoroliedoor API. Over het algemeen onderverdeeld in twee categorieën, staat "S-serie" voor benzinemotorolie, "C series" represents diesel motorolie. De API heeft ook een servicecategorie. De servicecategorie loopt van "SA" tot de hoogste "SN". Daarom kan vanuit het oogpunt van olieprestaties alles boven SJ-klasse worden gebruikt.
